Implementing Open Spaces Concept
It is expected that in an earthquake of a magnitude of 8.0 or stronger in the Kathmandu Valley would kill 100,000 people, injure 300,000 and displace 1.8 million. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have identified 83 safe open spaces across Kathmandu Valley which could be used for humanitarian response following an emergency. Efforts are underway in preparing and managing these open spaces. In order to provide synergy and to support timely establishment of Humanitarian Staging Areas in the identified open spaces, Flagship 2 is working closely with MoHA in bringing all concerned national authorities and cluster agencies together to engage in a common approach and mutual collaboration.
