Draft Report on Flagship 2 Thematic Workshop on Urban Search and Rescue

Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) and DPNet-Nepal jointly organized a half day national workshop on NRRC Flagship 2 programme: Urban Search and Rescue Capacity in the country Nepal. The workshop was organized in collaboration with Nepal Risk Reduction Consortium (NRRC) and the United Nations Office for coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Altogether 55 participants attended the workshop from 33 institutions representing a cross section of Government agencies, UN agencies, INGOs, NGOs, Donors, Academic Institutions and Civil Society.

Emergency preparedness is commonly defined as the process of ensuring that an organization (1) has complied with preventive measures, (2) is in a state of readiness to contain the effects of a forecasted disastrous event to minimize loss of life, injury, and damage to property, (3) can provide rescue, relief, rehabilitation, and other services in the aftermath of the disaster, and (4) has the capability and resources to continue to sustain its essential functions without being overwhelmed by the demand placed on them.

Nepal Hazard Risk Assessment Part 2: Exposure, Vulnerability and Risk Assessment

The project objectives include the development of a synthesis report on Nepal's major hazard risks by carrying out a review of existing vulnerability and hazard reports, studies, analyses and assessments at the national and sub-national levels; an overview presentation of the vulnerability assessment for the country; the development of a detailed economic analysis using the loss probability modeling of Nepal’s risks in conjunction with projected economic losses from forecasted hazards; and the mapping of high risk geographic regions.

Capacity Assessment for Nepal -- Urban Search and Rescue, Sustainable Training and Resilient Disaster Management

This report presents findings of a capacity assessment project conducted in Nepal in August, 2012. The project was sponsored by the United Nation Development Programme and Nepalese government. The goal of the project was to

  • Assess Nepal's capacity to respond to disasters
  • Provide constructive suggestions to help the nation establish immediate search and rescue capability while
  • Building up a sustainable emergency management system in the long term.
